Moving Tips

Follow our guide for some great tips to make your day a lot less stressfull.

We are here to help so let us know if you have any questions.

MAKE A LIST

  • Redirect mail with NZ Post

  • Confirm key exchange date and time with your solicitor/agent.

  • Tell your employer if required and book the day off work

  • Contact your utilities with your new address e.g. power, phone, internet.

  • Contact your insurance company to update your policy to your new home and put in place transit insurance. (We have found that it is cheaper for customers to get transit insurance from their own company rather than getting an add on insurance cover from moving companies.)

  • Moving is a great chance to declutter – now is the time to sell a few things or donate to charity.

  • Pack unessential items ahead of time.

  • Packing – label boxes with their destination room and contents. E.g.  KITCHEN  GLASSES & CUPS FRAGILE. Ensure fragile items are well wrapped.

  • Have some boxes labelled UNPACK FIRST. Such as enough linen for each bed, towels, food, toiletries, electronics.

  • Have an idea of where you want furniture to go in each room so you can let our movers know. Getting out the tape measure and seeing if things will fit where you hoped ahead of time means less stress on the day.

  • Plan your meals leading up to the day so there is less to take with you and do a takeaway meal on the last night.

  • On the day, empty your fridge items into a chilly bin. Freezers can remain full (depending on weight).

  • Arrange care or help for your kids and pets. Having some different activities for your kids can help keep them occupied.

  • Make sure you have a secure carrier cage for your cat and remember cats are best left inside for 1 week at a new house so they get used to their new area. Be prepared with a litter tray and some etc treats.

  • Final clean – look into booking a cleaning company to do that final clean so you can concentrate on your move in.

SAY GOODBYE TO UNUSED STUFF

The perfect opportunity to decluttter!

By saying goodbye to unused items ahead of time you will have less to pack & unpack and the move will also take less time. Start doing this as soon as possible before you start the packing process.

Clothing: Get ruthless and donate to charity all those items you won't wear again. Maybe there are clothes your children have outgrown you could pass onto a friend?

Food: Have a good hunt through for any expired foods and get rid of it! Plan your meals around what you have rather than buying more. Any non perishable food that no one in the family likes donate to a food bank.

Kitchen: Do you have way to many pots, plates or cups and they will never get used? Donate to charity or maybe someone going flatting would love them?

Toys: Sell online or donate to a local toy library or playcentre all those toys that your children no longer play with.

Toiletries and cleaning products: It's amazing how many almost empty bottles we keep. Start using those almost empties and ditch any products that will never get used.

Furniture: If you are downsizing house then check what will and won't fit at the new place. Planning on upgrading some furniture? All those large items that you don't want could be sold at auction such as Smiths Auctions.

Other items: Before packing have a look through your cupbboads and be ruthless. Do you have double ups on things you only need one of? Are you going to want those books, dvds, electronics etc sitting at the back of a cupboard? Start selling online, set up a garage sale or donate to charity such as Salvation Army which come to you.

GET STURDY, UNIFORM PACKING SUPPLIES

We sell a standard size box which is great for stacking. The size is big enough to fit a lot in without becoming too heavy. Banana boxes from the local supermarket are also great for books.

We also sell newsprint which works better than newspaper for wrapping as it avoids ink rubbing off onto your plates etc.

Bubblewrap can be used too for larger fragile items - we will also blanket wrap with furniture blankets and strap items into place when in transit.

ESSENTIAL ITEMS BOX

An essentials box contains useful items needed on the day. It should be the last box to pack but start thinking what to put in it well in advance.

  • Medication

  • Chargers

  • Keys

  • Important documents you might need on the day

  • Toiletries

  • A change of clothes

  • The children's can't live without toys

  • Basic kitchen items to keep you going before unpacking everything e.g. some utensils, plastic plates, bowls & cups and kettle. Food that you have on a daily basis such as some cereal for breakfast, coffee or tea, and snacks to keep everyone going. Plan an easy meal for the first night.

  • Water bottles.

  • Pets items e.g. leads, food, bowls.
